School Profile

New Harmony School, founded in 1877, serves one of Indiana's most
historic and truly unique communities. New Harmony's current population
is approximately 900. The community in its early years was a site for
experiments in communal living and educational research by the
Harmonists and Owenites. These historic factors have had a definite
impact on educational development in the New Harmony community.

New Harmony School is a small, rural school. Approximately two hundred
and twenty two students attend the school which serves students in special
education preschool through the senior year of high school. The current
number of students reflects a steady enrollment of 215-225 students over
the past four years. The school, a modern facility completed in 1987,
includes classrooms of ample space, two computer labs, media center,
and other appropriate facilities.

The school is governed by a five-member, elected board. The staff consists
of two administrators, three office staff members, twenty-one teachers, two
special education teachers, a full-time nurse, a part-time counselor, three
instructional assistants, two media center coordinators, two food service
employees, two maintenance personnel, two bus drivers, and one
computer coordinator. At the elementary level, kindergarten through grade
six, the instruction is presented in a self-contained classroom program with
students going to specialists for music, art, physical education, health,
cultural awareness, Title I, Gifted and Talented programs, and computer
instruction. Grades seven through twelve are departmentalized. The
curriculum is organized to meet or exceed all state curricular requirements.
Advanced placement classes are offered in biology, chemistry, physics, and
calculus. A College Achievement Program in English is available through
the University of Southern Indiana. Distance learning opportunities are now
being explored through elementary Spanish and AP physics classes.
Students enjoy an individualized approach to instruction made possible by
the 12:1 student-teacher ratio. Graduation and attendance rates both
regularly exceed ninety percent.

New Harmony School has a great sense of pride in being named a Four
Star Junior-Senior High School from 1993-1997. Even though small, the
school has been active in the Indiana High School Athletic Association with
programs for boys and girls each season. Academic competitions are also
part of the program with Spell Bowl and Academic Bowl being a regular
calendar item. The School has been the recipient of numerous grants. The
most recent one was for the installation of a state-of-the-art computer
network throughout the building. New Harmony School continues to be
recognized for its efforts on behalf of its students and the community.
