prestigious preservation award


Revisiting New Harmony:
Restoration Group secures
$500,000 grant
About Us
An acclaimed extracurricular activity is the work of the Ribeyre
Gymnasium Restoration Group. Local students have adopted the
project and they have sought many resources to make this
renovation a reality. The gym is currently being utilized as a
community center servicing the residents of the town of New
harmony. This project of restoring the Historic Ribeyre Gymnasium
has been in existence for 3 years and members  have raised over
$75,000. This year the group has been awarded the Community
Focus Fund of $500,000 from the Indiana Department of Rural
Affairs and traveled to Indianapolis to receive the money from Lt.
Governor Becky Skillman.

President Andrea Wenzel of the New Harmony School Ribeyre
Gymnasium Restoration Project was selected as a recipient of the
2005 Colts Jr. Community Quarterback Award. The Jr. Community
Quarterback program recognizes outstanding Indiana youth who
have made a commitment to giving back to the community. Andreas'
goal is to raise awareness among the youth of New Harmony School
in the matters historic preservation and to provide a new era a
community facility and fitness area. This facility will include a
walking track and house educational services severely needed by all
kinds of groups, leaders and supporters.
Our Mission
The goal of the Ribeyre Gymnasium Restoration Group in
undertaking this project is to enhance the quality of life in the
community of New Harmony through the redevelopment of the
Ribeyre Gymnasium. This project involves students, teachers and
community members working together for the restoration,
preservation, adaptive re-use, and utilization of the historic structure.
