New Harmony, Indiana is an experience like no other. A community that began almost two hundred years ahead of its time, New Harmony was first a spiritual sanctuary that later became a haven for international scientists, scholars and educators who sought equality in communal living.
Relax in a small town reminiscent of days gone by. New Harmony is an oasis of calm in a world where it's harder and harder to find a slow pace and friendly people.
Discover a place where it's safe to walk any time of the day or night; in fact, New Harmony is best seen on foot. While strolling, you'll enjoy our beautiful parks and gardens.
During the day, browse through antique stores or visit one of our many specialty shops with items ranging from Christmas ornaments to organic gardening supplies. Local craftspeople can show you hand made pottery and home spun wool.
In the evening, take a carriage ride through the town then enjoy a leisurely dinner of everything from beer & burgers to fine dining.
By the time you lay your head on the pillow that evening you'll realize that your stress level has plummeted and you are as relaxed as a cat stretched out on a warm windowsill.
The community includes several businesses related to the tourism industry. Some of the major employers in the community include Nelson Plastics, Harmonie Healthcare, Historic New Harmony/University of Southern Indiana, the Red Geranium Enterprises, Harmonie State Park, and the school. A number of small businesses have opened in the community within the past five years. Farming operations involve a large portion of the thirty-seven square miles in the township. Other community members work in nearby Mt. Vernon or Evansville. While limited housing is still a factor, several new homes have been built in the recent past. Rental housing remains scarce. Community growth is still somewhat limited by a lack of housing.
Families in New Harmony are typically two-parent families. Most parents have earned a high school diploma and an increasing number of parents have additional training beyond high school. Approximately eighteen percent of students qualify for the free or reduced lunch program. The school continues to serve as a community center and enjoys a high level of loyalty and support from the community. The school family includes students, parents, staff, and community members of diverse backgrounds. A Family Time Policy makes it possible for families to have Wednesday nights and Sundays uninterrupted by school activities. Parents are involved in various activities at the school including the Parents and Teachers Association, the Good Choices Committee, Textbook Adoption Committees, Chemical-Free After Prom Committee, Athletic Booster Club, Handbook Committee, Quest Program, PBA Committees, and numerous other special topic committees as needed such as: the Washington D.C. Inaugural Trip and the Million Penny Drive for elementary playground equipment. Community organizations such as the Business Associates, Kiwanis, Kappa Kappa Kappa, and the Ministry Association are strongly linked to the school program through such things as the Scholarship Banquet, the Bug Button Program, and Athletic Recognition Dinners.
