What's Special About New Harmony, Indiana?

In 1814, Father George Rapp led a group of German
Lutheran immigrants (called the Harmonie Society) to
30,000 acres on the Wabash River. The Harmonists came
to prepare for the Second Coming. They built and
perfected a cosmopolitan community from the wilderness
of the Indiana Territory. In 1824, Robert Owen, a
Welch-born industrialist, purchased New Harmony with
plans to create a model community where education and
social equality would prosper. His utopian dream was
never fully realized, but his efforts produced pioneering
contributiions to education, geology, trade schools, and
women's suffrage. Many of the original buildings and sites
from old New Harmony remain, and are open for tours
through the educational programs affiliated with the
University of Southern Indiana.

Hundred 2008
May 3 & 4, 2008
Members of the New Harmony community
organize and present the Harmonie
Hundred. All proceeds from the Harmonie
Hundred go to help fund a unique and
educational experience for the students
of New Harmony High School. Scheduled
around a special and historical day every
four years, school staff take the entire
student body from New Harmony High
School to the Inauguration of the
President of the United States in
Washington, DC.         As a follow-up to
pre-trip class activities, and while in our
nation's capital, students participate in a
wreath ceremony at Arlington Cemetery,
and conduct a memorial service at the
Vietnam Memorial for a former graduate
of the High School. On the return trip,
students visit Economy, Pennsylvania,
the location of the resettlement of the
Harmonists after leaving New Harmony.
